I’m hosting my first giveaway!

June 29th, 2008 · 37 Comments · Giveaways

Hey, if this is your first time here, subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Remember a few posts back I talked about my addiction to giveaways? Well now I get to host my own! Its nothing major - no MP3 players or fancy car seats - but its still very cool.

Thanks to MomCentral and Recycline, I have two of these Recycline toothbrushes to give away to one lucky TCM reader.

This isn’t your average toothbrush. Thanks to a partnership between Preserve and Stonyfield Farms, these toothbrushes (and some of their other products) are made from recycled yogurt cups. Princess, who learned all about recycling on Earth Day and has been obsessed with it ever since, thinks that is just the coolest thing. She even chose her new recycled toothbrush over her Hannah Montana Tooth Tunes toothbrush. (P.S. They also offer Preserve Jr., a kid-sized toothbrush.) They also have other “green” products like razors, tableware, and kitchen products.

So…back to the giveaway part. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment with your best recycling tip. Make sure you include your email address or blog URL in case you win. I’ll take comments until July 6th, 6 PM Central and then I’ll pick a winner using Random.org.

Good luck!

April

I like to compost, but I know it’s not always feasible. Try to use reusable as much as you can, in the kitchen, at the grocery store, old towels cut into smaller sizes for cleaning instead of paper towels, sigg bottles instead of plastics, etc..

We re-use our plastic grocery bags for trash can liners.

  • 4 4 Stacy // Jun 30, 2008 at 10:30 am

We compost. I have noticed that my neighbors have a ton of trash and don’t recylce. We have one trash can, one very full recycling bin and compost through the city as well as in our backyard.

Our family recycles and re-purpose whenever we can. But, my best tip is to get your kids involved. You’d be surprised how much they contribute and it’s a wonderful investment in the future.

We are members of Freeshare/Freecycle so whenever we have something we no longer need or want we can give it away to someone who wants it or needs it and it keeps things out of the junk yards.

we got a can crusher so it is fun to crunch the pop cans and recycle them

My best tip is just to make due with what you have - instead of buying brand new stuff look around the house and reuse something. afdr3d@umkc.edu

I like to reuse store bought food item containers. Then you don’t have to go out and buy them. Great giveaway, thanks! hellomary018 at yahoo dot com

This is a kinda goofy tip, but proved necessary in my house. Label your recycle and garbage cans. My mom (who is the one that raised me to be green) kept throwing garbage in my recycle bin because she just thought I had two garbage cans next to each other or something.

We have a recycling trash bin right next to our regular trash bin. Our kids put up pictures of what can go in there (the plastic numbers…etc…) to be recycled so there is no confusion. Love it!

  • 12 12 Bree // Jun 30, 2008 at 1:25 pm

Get different containers for the recycling. Take a picture of what goes in the container, and attach it to the front. This way, even the littlest family member can get involved!

I think the most important step is to start at the source: don’t buy things you don’t need, don’t buy things with excess packaging, don’t buy things that aren’t easily recyclable, buy things that will last.

My best recycling tip is to get online and print the rules for recycling in your area. That way you know that what you put in your bin is prepared and will be recycled properly.

We reuse our old worn-out clothes by making them into rags and we are starting to recycle our glass.

  • 16 16 ticole96 // Jun 30, 2008 at 3:30 pm

My best recycling tip is that I try to reuse things, such as, I try to reuse shredded paper for my parakeet’s cage or use plastic containers to store food in.

My best tip is to use boxes over again - if we ever get something in a big box, my husband puts my son inside of it and pulls him around the house, pretending he’s in a car. My son loves it!

I put a lot of the things we don’t want anymore on the freecycle board. Stuff is usually gone the same day!

my best recycling tip is to try to get glass bottles when you buy sauce or something like that and reuse it for when you make your own

I keep plastic bags and use them for everything - trash liners, shopping bags, covers, etc!

Found you on Prizey! :) When I’m done with my magazines, I take them to the “magazine exchange” at my local library. Thanks so much!

My favorite thing that we do is use infant size prefold diapers for tissues and paper towels. I get a pound of retired cloth diapers from our local diaper service for $5 for these purposes.

  • 28 28 Kathleen @ Katydid & Kid // Jul 1, 2008 at 8:44 pm

I do a lot of recycling…cloth napkins, cloth diapers, canvas bags at the grocery store. My best tip would be to reuse old t-shirts for grocery bags, just cut off the arms, sew the bottom shut and you have a bag. The armholes become handles and the neckhole is the bag’s opening.

  • 29 29 Kimberly // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:55 pm

We don’t do nearly as much as we should, but one change we made this year is significantly decreasing the ziploc bags we use. We are learning to use our tupperware dishes and such in our lunches, for leftovers, precut fruit…everything possible.

  • 30 30 Linda // Jul 2, 2008 at 12:48 am

I do a lot of recycling. One thing I do is return the plastic shopping bags to the grocery store.

we exchanged all our light bulbs to the energy efficient spiral ones,we recycle and i’ve even started recycling at work.

  • 32 32 melonkelli // Jul 3, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Get the kids involved! My younger son loves sorting the cans & bottles and putting them in the bin. My older son can carry the newspaper to the bin.

  • 33 33 Heather C // Jul 6, 2008 at 6:58 am

As soon as a sock gets a hole in it, I toss it in the housecleaning bin. I use old socks for all kinds of cleaning, then just toss them in the washer when I’m finished.

  • 34 34 Brooke // Jul 6, 2008 at 7:32 am

For recycling clothes, keep a bin for hand-me-downs right in the closet and pop things in there straight away.

  • 35 35 Caryn B // Jul 6, 2008 at 3:29 pm

We bought some cute reusable bags so we don’t have to continue to use plastic bags.
